Italy leads the world in terms of the number of Geographical Indications in the agri-food sector, with 893 products in the food, wine, and spirits sectors . With over 300 consortia and 850,000 workers , the Italian PDO economy is a production model that generates over twenty billion euros in value, accounting for 20% of the national agri-food sector.
This is the picture depicted in the latest Ismea-Qualivita report , which outlines a record born from the connection between food, territory, and community. In this context, the PDO and PGI food sector comprises 328 products throughout Italy, with a value of over €9 billion and €4.7 billion in exports.
Behind every GI is a guarantee of compliance with the rules defined in the production specifications approved at the EU level and with control plans approved by the ICQRF (Central Inspectorate for the Protection of Quality and Fraud Prevention of Agri-food Products) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry, as the competent authority. Compliance with the rules is delegated by the competent authority to independent certification bodies .
In this scenario, Csqa , as a third-party certification body, guarantees the conformity of eighty products which, in terms of economic value, represent over half of the national PDO and PGI production (Qualivita Observatory based on Ismea-Qualivita 2024 data).
The total value of CSQA-certified food production reaches over €4.6 billion . Of the eighty certified products, five are among the top ten PGIs in terms of economic value; these are renowned agri-food excellences exported worldwide : Grana Padano PDO, Parma Ham PDO, Gorgonzola PDO, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena PGI, and Pasta di Gragnano PGI. Other iconic Made in Italy products include Bresaola della Valtellina PGI, Asiago PDO, Fontina PDO, and Modica Chocolate PGI.
These numbers not only demonstrate a quantitative record, but also reflect the agri-food system's confidence in the quality of the certification service.
