ISO/UNDP 53001:2026, Management Systems for the Sustainable Development Goals
ISO/UNDP 53001:2026, Management Systems for the Sustainable Development Goals ISO published ISO/UNDP 53001:2026 – Management systems for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — Requirements on 28 September 2026, the first international standard defining the requirements for a management system dedicated to organizations’ contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Developed jointly by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the new standard aims to help businesses and organizations move from simply declaring their commitment to the SDGs to a structured, measurable approach geared towards continuous improvement.

From sustainability commitments to a management system

ISO/UNDP 53001 provides a framework for integrating sustainable development into an organization’s purpose, strategy, governance, operational processes, and business decisions.

The principle underlying the standard is the typical one of ISO management systems: the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.
Organizations are therefore called upon to identify their priorities, define objectives, implement actions, measure results, and progressively improve their performance in relation to the SDGs.

A central element is the analysis of the positive and negative impacts generated by the organization's activities.
The standard also requires considering the needs and expectations of stakeholders and understanding the interconnections, synergies and possible trade-offs between the different Sustainable Development Goals.

The main elements of ISO/UNDP 53001

The structure of the standard follows that of typical ISO management system standards and includes the topics of organizational context, leadership, planning, support, operational activities, performance evaluation and improvement.

In particular, the system allows organizations to:
  • identify and evaluate the positive and negative impacts associated with one's activities;
  • identify the SDGs to which the organization can make a significant contribution;
  • engage and consult with stakeholders;
  • define meaningful and measurable goals and targets ;
  • integrate these objectives into the organization's processes and decisions;
  • plan the collection and management of impact data ;
  • select indicators and monitor and evaluate performance;
  • manage risks and opportunities related to sustainable development;
  • implement internal audits, reviews and continuous improvement actions .

An integrated approach to the 17 SDGs

ISO/UNDP 53001 takes into account all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
This does not mean that every organization must pursue all the objectives without distinction: instead, the standard allows for the identification of the most relevant SDGs in relation to its context, activities, impacts, and stakeholders.

The goal is to avoid fragmented sustainability management , also considering the relationships between the different SDGs and the possible positive or negative effects that a choice can have on multiple objectives at the same time.

What are the benefits for companies?

For companies, the new ISO/UNDP 53001 first of all offers the possibility of transforming sustainability commitments into a structured management process, linking the SDGs to strategy and operational activities.

Implementation of the standard can also foster a greater ability to measure and demonstrate progress, strengthen transparency and accountability to stakeholders , and improve the identification of risks and opportunities related to sustainable development.

A further element of interest is the possibility of integrating the new system with other management standards already adopted by companies .

According to ISO, ISO/UNDP 53001 is designed to integrate with standards such as ISO 9001 for quality and ISO 14001 for the environment, allowing existing processes and tools to be enhanced and duplication to be reduced.

A standard designed to go beyond Agenda 2030

The standard is applicable to organizations of any size, sector, and geographic area, including private enterprises, public administrations, educational institutions, and civil society organizations.

Another significant aspect concerns its time horizon. Although built around the current Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, ISO/UNDP 53001 was designed to remain relevant beyond 2030, adapting to any future global sustainable development goals.

ISO/UNDP 53001 will also be joined by ISO/UNDP 53002, which provides guidelines for implementing the management system.
The two standards are designed to provide organizations with a common framework to effectively integrate sustainable development and the SDGs into business decisions and investments.

With the publication of ISO/UNDP 53001:2026, the SDGs enter the international landscape of management systems in an even more structured way, offering organizations a common tool for moving from sustainability commitments to the definition of objectives, actions, indicators, and verifiable results over time.
