The province of Belluno presents itself as the “ safe of carbon credits ” and the regional agency “Veneto Agricoltura” is ready to manage it, first of all by setting the standards and then opening the Credit Register. With an absolute novelty: «We will “cultivate” the credits not only in the woods, perhaps finally renewed with native and more resistant essences, but also in the pastures and more generally in mountain and hill agriculture».
Nicola Dell'Acqua, director of “Veneto Agricoltura”, announced this a few days after the conference on May 23rd, at the Park Hotel Villa Carpendada, on “ Generation and valorization of carbon credits ”.
In the province there are over 221 thousand hectares of wooded areas (about 53% of Veneto) capable of absorbing large quantities of carbon dioxide. Carbon credits are in fact generated by certifying the CO2 absorbed by natural resources (woods and forests, but also agricultural surfaces) and calculating the missed emissions (for example, energy generated by renewable sources (photovoltaic, hydroelectric, geothermal, wind).
"The order of magnitude is several million euros per year from the moment such absorptions are officially certified and then put on the market. From this point of view, the Bellunese area is central to the decarbonization process. A territory that has so far been considered peripheral can in fact become a protagonist of the environmental transition thanks to its natural resources and precisely because it is vast and sparsely populated" reflects Dell'Acqua. It was calculated, just two years ago, by scholars in the sector, that 80% of the natural areas of the Bellunese area can guarantee an absorption equal to 1 million and 650 thousand tons of CO2 per year . That is, approximately 500,000 tons of CO2 absorbed more than that produced.

"It is true, however, that the result generates significant resources to be made available to the community" assures the director Dell'Acqua. "Well, we at Veneto Agricoltura position ourselves as the public company that, with the certification company Csqa , could first of all set the standards to certify the carbon credit and, subsequently, open the Credit Register as a Region".
