Milan's Parco Nord is the first Italian park to obtain PEFC certification ( Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification , a nonprofit organization founded in 1999) for the sustainable management of urban greenery, bringing to Italy an international standard applied primarily to forests. The recognition, issued by CSI and CSQA, covers 443.8 hectares of woodlands, parks, gardens, and trees spanning Milan, Sesto San Giovanni, Bresso, Cinisello Balsamo, Novate Milanese, Cormano, and Cusano Milanino. The certification attests to the adoption of transparent and verified management criteria: biodiversity protection, tree monitoring, attention to the carbon cycle and ecosystem quality, as well as attention to the social and recreational aspects of green spaces. The technical process was supported by "Rete Clima", an innovative project "both in Italy and internationally, in which each of the actors involved played a significant role in the implementation of the first Italian certification that enhances urban forests and greenery in cities", comments Paolo Viganò , president of "Rete Clima".
