UNI has published the Reference Practice UNI/PdR 182-1:2025 “Guidelines in the forestry nursery sector – Part 1: Forest reproductive material”.Developed in collaboration with the Piedmont Region, the document covers forestry nursery production, from the collection of fruits and seeds and their management in the nursery to the production of seedlings in open fields and containers, up to the definition of the requirements for the marketing of forest propagation material (MFM). The aim is to identify best practices in a sector that is experiencing significant growth.
Properly and efficiently managing forest reproductive material, from seed collection to planting seedlings, means caring for an entire delicate supply chain that has implications for the conservation of the genetic diversity of ecosystems and requires ensuring the environmental sustainability of the activities carried out , as well as protecting the health of those who work in the sector.
The document therefore aims to serve as a guideline for public and private operators and technicians, as well as decision-makers, offering an integrated and up-to-date approach that focuses on the quality of the nursery supply chain while respecting the ecological and genetic complexity of forest ecosystems.
To draft UNI/PdR 182-1, the working group of industry experts drew on established best practices from several regional forest nurseries in northern Italy, as well as the results of applied research.
The Reference Practice is divided into several chapters that address, from a practical point of view, the fundamental aspects through which the supply chain is structured:
- seed procurement ;
- their conservation and treatment ;
- nursery production both in open fields and in containers and in protected environments;
- the technical-cultural requirements for the marketing of forest nursery material, etc.
