The Coop 2025 Report describes an Italy where purchasing power is under pressure. Italian families see mandatory costs—housing, utilities, transportation, food—engulfing a large portion of their budgets, leaving little scope for other consumption.

In this context, saving becomes not only a means of prudently managing resources but also a structural element of consumer behavior: 42% of Italians declare that saving is the main driver of their purchases.

"Deconsumerism" refers to a transformation not only in spending volumes but also in consumption patterns . The main characteristics are purchasing only what is necessary : reducing spending on luxury goods or possessions for their own sake. Using second-hand and vintage goods, repairing goods rather than buying new ones. Utilitarian consumption choices : even when spending, the focus is on utility rather than the desire for status or gratification.

Despite the trend toward savings, food remains a central component of Italians' consumption, but the nature of their relationship with it is changing. Fresh, minimally processed, organic foods with few additives are favored. Awareness of food as an "ally to health" is growing. Diets include more vegetables, fruit, and fish; a decline in the consumption of red meat, cured meats, sweets, and alcoholic beverages. There is a tendency toward home-cooked meals (home dining) and lengthy preparation times, sacrificing (though not completely) eating out or quick fixes.
