The event took place on October 4, 2026, at 11:30 a.m. at the San Cono Municipality. The event was part of the 40th Prickly Pear Festival. The roundtable discussion was attended by the Mayor of San Cono, Dr. Calaciura Cono, Dr. Carmelo Firrarello, the Agriculture Councilor of San Cono, Emilio Grasseni, and the regional representative for PGI and PDO certifications for the Sicily Region. Representatives of the CSQA national certifications, Dr. Nicola Conterno and Dr. Lucia Caputa, were also present.
Following the Mayor's opening remarks, he expressed his willingness to create an economic and productive environment that can unite all producers in a shared project. This project should result in the PDO certification of production areas within the territories of San Cono, Piazza Armerina, San Michele di Ganzaria, and other surrounding areas.
In this regard, Dr. Carmelo Firrarello, an agronomist who currently oversees the various local producers, explained that San Cono already has a DOP certification, but its incomplete birth has posed numerous challenges, especially regarding certifications related to product packaging and distribution. This issue therefore requires a review process.
