How do you become a risk assessor and communicator?
The answers to these questions can be found in the volume “Evaluation and communication of risk in food safety” , edited by Maria Longeri of the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Sciences of the University of Milan and published by Milano University Press.
The volume was conceived to offer university students interested in becoming food safety risk assessors and communicators a study and research tool, in which they can find all the basic information to approach this important profession, which represents the science underlying the safety of the food that reaches our tables.
The idea was born from a collaboration, with educational and dissemination purposes, between Office 3 – EFSA and the focal point of the General Directorate of the collegial bodies for the protection of health of the Ministry of Health and the University of Milan , which led to the creation of this manual.
The text presents the key concepts and skills needed for risk assessment and communication, moving from a theoretical level to a practical-operational level thanks to numerous examples, to a didactic and informative approach, precisely to promote the translation of theory into a professional practice that is also interesting and compelling.
The monograph begins by describing the body of legislation (EU and national) and gradually delves into the discipline, also indicating the basic training paths and the financial support to achieve them.
Thanks to specialized insights, it allows an easy general understanding of the topic and of the actions that Italy and the European Union have implemented to face, in a coordinated and effective way, the global health challenges of the coming years. The chapters are accompanied by an updated bibliographic support.
The volume was written by experts who carry out analytical and/or applied research activities in risk assessment and communication on a daily basis, coming from the network of national organizations active and competent in the field: Ministry of Health, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale di Lazio e Toscana (IZSLT), Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale di Abruzzo e Molise (IZSAM) and Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) , which in particular edited the chapter dedicated to risk communication.
The volume (free in PDF format ) and the presentation podcast are available on the Milano University Press website.
