Some good news for our urban greenery has arrived just before Christmas. Parco Nord Milano , an organization promoting the proper and sustainable management of forestry, has become the first organization in Italy to achieve PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) certification, aiming to maintain and increase urban greenery while protecting biodiversity and ecosystem services. The recognition, issued by the CSI and CSQA certification bodies , is certainly a significant step in enhancing metropolitan green infrastructure and adopting transparent, rigorous, and sustainable land management practices.

This is the first certification in Italy specifically dedicated to urban greenery, and it represents, within the urban context, the extension of an already consolidated international system for forest management, present in 57 countries worldwide with 300 million hectares of certified forests, 1.1 million of which are in Italy. A key role in PEFC certification was also played by the requirement to comply with the Minimum Environmental Criteria ("CAM for Public Green Management") established by the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security . This certification certifies that the management of trees, parks, gardens, and urban forests is carried out according to internationally recognized criteria geared towards environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
