What is it?

UNI ISO 7101 – “Management of healthcare organizations – Quality management systems in healthcare organizations – Requirements” is the first international standard specifically dedicated to quality management in healthcare organizations.

The standard provides a comprehensive framework for governing the quality of care, strengthening the safety of patients and operators, managing risks and improving performance and the use of resources over time .
At the center are the person, their needs, and the organization's ability to provide accessible, appropriate, timely, safe, and equitable care.

All healthcare organizations, regardless of size, organizational structure, legal status, or management model, that assume direct responsibility for patient care and intend to systematically improve the quality, safety, effectiveness, and outcomes of healthcare can obtain ISO 7101 certification .

Key points

The main elements of UNI ISO 7101 are:
  • development of a quality culture , supported by leadership and shared at all levels of the organization;
  • centrality of the person and attention to the needs , rights, diversity and inclusiveness of users;
  • accessibility, appropriateness, continuity and timeliness of care;
  • systematic management of clinical and organizational risks for patients, operators and other stakeholders;
  • promoting the safety and well-being of users and healthcare personnel;
  • effective clinical communication and correct management and protection of health information;
  • definition of emergency management and organizational resilience plans ;
  • measuring and monitoring performance through indicators and data- and evidence-based decisions;
  • enhancement of skills and continuous training of staff, including with respect to ethical issues;
  • continuous improvement of care processes, performance, and outcomes.
Compared to ISO 9001, which is applicable to organizations in any sector, UNI ISO 7101 adapts the principles of quality management systems to the specific needs of healthcare, offering a targeted framework for addressing its organizational, clinical, and care-related complexity.
