Valtellina PGI Apple: CSQA Renews Authorization for Inspections The ICQRF – Central Inspectorate for the Protection of Quality and Repression of Fraud of Agri-food Products, has renewed CSQA's authorization to carry out checks on the Protected Geographical IndicationMela di Valtellina” , to ensure the product's compliance with the production and quality standards set out in the European PGI protection regulations.

A fruit that is symbolic of the Alpine region

The Valtellina PGI Apple is a fruit of excellence linked to the mountainous territory of Valtellina (province of Sondrio), characterized by unique soil and climate conditions that give the product high-level organoleptic qualities.

The European Protected Geographical Indication brand certifies the origin, uniqueness, and inseparable link between the apple and its territory.

The Valtellina PGI apple is one of Italy's most representative fruit and vegetable specialties, the result of a perfect balance between nature and agricultural culture.
Grown on the sunny slopes of Valtellina, this apple is distinguished by its crunchiness, natural aroma, and sweet flavor, characteristics developed thanks to the altitude of the apple orchards (between 200 and 900 m above sea level) and the integrated and organic production techniques adopted by local farmers.

The production area includes approximately 60 municipalities in the province of Sondrio and concerns the main apple varieties such as Red Delicious, Golden Delicious and Gala.

Production takes place according to integrated or organic production techniques, with specific agronomic practices oriented towards environmental sustainability and the health of the fruit .
The trees are planted in rows with adequate spacing to ensure optimal ventilation and light; pruning, irrigation, and fruit thinning are managed to maximize the quality, yield, and shelf life of the product.

Tradition and cultural value

Apple growing in Valtellina has deep historical roots : centuries ago, apple trees were grown in gardens and between rows of vines, but it was in the post-World War II period that apple growing in Valtellina established itself as a specialized crop of great economic importance, transforming the local agricultural landscape and consolidating specific agricultural skills and techniques.

CSQA: quality, safety, and trust throughout the supply chain

The renewal of the ICQRF authorization confirms CSQA's role in carrying out rigorous, transparent controls that comply with the highest European standards, protecting producers, consumers, and the authenticity of the Mela di Valtellina PGI designation.
